Our History & Vision
The Handball Federation of India (HFI) was established in 1972 and is recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, as the sole national governing body for handball. Headquartered in New Delhi, we are affiliated with the Asian Handball Federation (AHF) and the International Handball Federation (IHF).
Our mission is to develop and promote handball at all levels across India, from grassroots to elite competitions. We aim to foster a vibrant handball community that encourages participation, enhances skills, and cultivates champions who represent India on global platforms.
Over the decades, HFI has organized numerous national championships, coaching clinics, and referee training programs. We have seen steady growth in participation, with over 10,000 registered players and 500 affiliated clubs nationwide. Our strategic plan focuses on infrastructure development, talent identification, and international collaboration to elevate Indian handball to new heights.
Handball is a dynamic sport that combines speed, agility, and teamwork. In India, it has gained popularity in schools, universities, and sports academies. HFI works closely with state associations to ensure uniform development and to provide opportunities for young athletes. We believe in the power of sports to transform lives and contribute to national pride.
Our vision for 2030 includes establishing handball as a mainstream sport in India, with a robust league system, world-class training facilities, and consistent podium finishes in Asian Games and Olympic qualifiers. We are committed to inclusivity, ensuring equal opportunities for men and women, and promoting handball among differently-abled athletes.
